Trade “Threat Level” Report

By: Daniel Naimer

Threat Level 1
Whoever came up with this is either a dreamer or John Ferguson Jr.

NOT EVEN WORTH CALLING A RUMOR.

Threat Level 2
Well, Jimmy thought it would be smart to pump false hope into the teams’ faithful or to simply make them cry.

VIRTUALLY NO CHANCE.

Threat Level 3
Now we’re becoming more realistic.

PROBABLY WON’T HAPPEN

Threat Level 4
Add a little cash or a whore and we have ourselves a deal.

MIGHT HAPPEN.

Threat Level 5

This GM would have to be incredibly stupid or John Ferguson Jr. not to take this deal.

IT HAS A GOOD CHANCE OF HAPPENING.

Potential Trade List:

1. Montreal and San Jose

MTL: Steve Bernier, Patrick Marleau, and Kyle McLaren
SJ: Michael Ryder, Radek Bonk, Andrei Markov, and a 2nd RND Pick

Source: Sportsnet Forum

Analysis: I found this trade rumor on the Sportsnet Forum and I have to say this is utter insanity. I mean don’t get me wrong, Patrick Marleau could fit nicely between Kovy and Samsonov or even Higgy and Ryder but for the price of giving away our best two way forward and PK specialist and the most sound defenseman on our team, I think not. Plus how warm would the Montreal faithful be to welcoming the likes of Kyle McLaren……cough 2002 cough.

Trade Threat Level 1

2. Montreal and St. Louis

MTL: Dean Mcammond, Ottawa gets Radek Dvorak
STL: Mike Johnson.

Source: HockeyTradeRumors.com

Analysis: To be completely blunt and honest, this trade would simply benefit the St. Louis Blues. Mike Johnson is having a superb campaign with the Montreal Canadiens this season, mainly on the defensive end but from time to time he shows that he can be an offensive threat as well. Hence, Johnson’s presence with the Habs is much stronger than putting pucks in the net. In 45 games this season Johnson has 19 points and 8 goals with a +12 rating. Radek Dvorak is a wash-up forward and I don’t believe that the Ottawa Senators are in need of a player of his kind. This season he has 19 pts in 44 games and has a +/- rating of -8. On the bright side he is a good two way forward that can kill penalties. Finally, Dean Mcammond is a solid two way player like the players above. He is a versatile checking forward and has great PK abilities. His heart is immeasurable and passion for the game is high. His style of play is run and gun and he’s been an asset to the Ottawa Senators this season. He has 15 points in 46 games and has a +4 rating. Overall, I can’t see the Ottawa Senators or the Montreal Canadiens giving up these players who have been doing such great jobs for their respective teams. The fact is Montreal wouldn’t be losing much since both Johnson and Mcammond are similar players, however, I don’t see Ottawa wanting to give away Mcammond to a division rival. Moreover, Mcammond is a checking center, which is something that Montreal doesn’t need. Then again who knows what will happen….

Trade Threat Level 2.5

3. Montreal and Columbus

MTL: Manny Maholtra and a 3rd RND pick
CLM: Sergei Samsonov.

Source: Forum/Radio

Analysis: Well, this is more realistic than getting Sergei Federov but still doesn’t address the needs of the Habs. Maholtra is a checking forward, which is something that we have an abundance of. If we get any more of these kinds of players we could have three checking lines. Don’t get me wrong, Samsonov stinks more than that mysterious smell that haunted Manhattan last week but we can’t shoot the gun on moving him. Yes, Maholtra is young and a passionate player but not worth moving Samsonov for. Then again it’s only my opinion. However, I can see why Gainey would like acquiring Maholtra. He’s fast, agile, young, and is of course a grinder. Gainey loves those players and I think he’s realizing that perhaps, after half a season, Samsonov is not what Montreal needs.

Trade Threat Level 4

4. Colorado and Philadelphia

COL: Peter Forsberg
PHI: Jose Theodore and a 1st RND

Source: Forum

Analysis: Well there is no doubt that Philadelphia needs a goalie but Theodore???? Has the world gone mad!!! This guy is worse than me!! That’s right ME!! I could do a better job than Theo at stopping a puck from getting behind me. Anyways, perhaps Forsberg may be unhappy in a losing environment and regrets leaving the Rocky Mountain high. Perhaps he wants to be contending for the Stanley Cup like he has been his entire career. Perhaps he misses playing with the likes of Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk. Moreover, there is no question that both of these players have their issues. Forsberg succumbs to pain any time he touches the puck and Theodore just straight out can’t play goalie for the life of him. Not to mention he’s losing his hair (something that Propecia is taking care of). Besides, perhaps the 1st RND pick could be the deal breaker since salary plays virtually no role in this deal, for Theodore is making 5.5 million and Forsberg 5.75 million. So, even though this deal is unlikely, we cannot rule it out. We’ll see come trade deadline.

Trade Threat Level 3.75

5. Toronto and Columbus

CLM: Andrew Raycroft
TOR: Bag of pucks and a stale Cuban cigar

Source: John Ferguson Jr.

Analysis: DOUG!!!!! WHATEVER YOU DO KEEP THE PUCKS AND CIGAR!!!

Trade Threat Level 1-1000
