Today is a special day in Oshawa as it is the first ever Stephen Colbert Day. A spokesman for Oshawa has announced that they are expecting 1,500 die hard Stephen Colbert Fans to stream into General Motors Centre in Downtown Oshawa to celebrate. Well, I guess I should mention that Don Cherry is going to be there as well, I guess he’ll attract a few a people. For those of you who don’t follow the show here’s how Stephen Colbert Day came to be. Fans of the show were encouraged to go online and participate in the vote to name the Saginaw Spirit mascot. Colbert fans prevailed and the mascot was named Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle. After the Spirit’s mascot was named after Colbert, he went on the offensive and started trash talking the Oshawa Generals, for example criticizing them for a charity event that involved throwing bears onto the ice. Colbert also suggested that next time Spirit fans should throw GM annual reports onto the ice as GM had a rough year. Eventually the mayor of Oshawa decided to make a challenge to Colbert. If the Generals beat the Spirit in the upcoming game Colbert would have to wear an Oshawa jersey on the show, but if the Spirit won then the Mayor promised that Colbert’s birthday would be Stephen Colbert Day in Oshawa. Well Stephen accepted but wanted to go one further and suggested that, “When the Spirit kicks Oshawa’s moose-haunches, I don’t want you to declare Stephen Colbert Day on my birthday: I want you to declare it on your birthday.” The mayor accepted and unfortunately for him the Spirit beat the Generals 5-4 in a game that saw both stuffed bears and annual reports thrown onto the ice. Today is March 20th, it is Mayor Gray’s birthday which means more importantly that it’s Stephen Colbert Day! For those close to Oshawa they can make their way downtown and join in the festivities including an appearance by Don Cherry, a Stephen Colbert look alike contest and a hockey challenge between the Generals’ Shooter and the Spirit’s Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle, admission is $5.
