Last night I started the trip that I’ve been dreaming about for years. I’m going to see 30 hockey games, one in each of the 30 NHL arenas, in 30 consecutive nights! It’s the Ultimate Hockey Road Trip, and to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever done it before. 30 Games In 30 Nights!
My adventure started last night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, and today I flew to L.A. for the Kings game tonight and the Ducks game tomorrow. I’ll attend one game every single night for the next month.
This 30 Games In 30 Nights trip takes lots of planning and a little luck (I’m keeping my fingers crossed). For months, I’ve been working on the details… Poring through the NHL schedule for hours to find just the right combination of games, staying away from the frigid winter months when weather could disrupt travel, finding affordable flights that get me into each city in time, coming up with backup travel plans if flights are cancelled, and so on.
I’ve put together a simple web site to share the ups and downs of my adventure, so you can visit www.30GamesIn30Nights.com for all the details and a daily blog with updates from each city.
As a hard-core hockey fan who loves to fly, I’m well prepared for the ultimate hockey road trip, but I’m on a tight budget. Although I’m flying to most cities, I‘ve found some cheap hotel rooms, bargain airfares and am using a bunch of my frequent flyer miles to keep costs down. Fortunately, the teams and my fellow fans have been generous with game tickets so far.
I’m a big Tampa Bay Lightning fan, and have planned the trip to see seven Lightning road games during the month before ending up in Tampa Bay for the final game on Nov 24th. Friends or family are joining me in some cities, but I’ll be flying solo for most games. Here’s the complete schedule.
30 games, 30 nights and 30,000 miles of travel won’t be easy, but I know I’ll have a great time along the way! I’ve made plenty of new friends already and I hope to see you on the road or at the rink!
