I always have trouble placing Henri Richard (who I only saw play over about half his career) accurately within the rankings of hockey greats (Jean Beliveau, Yvan Cournoyer, Larry Robinson, Ken Dryden, Bob Gainey, Guy Lafleur, The list goes on…).
Henri’s eleven Stanley Cup Rings constitute one of the most impressive achievements in hockey (maybe all sports combined). Yet Henri always seems to be third or fourth, sometimes even fifth banana on those great Canadien’s teams. He only led the team in scoring once in all those years, only finished second twice. I remember him in the playoffs as being a very solid contributor, but seldom in the first star category.
So what am I missing? Was he a great player or just a very good one who happened to be in the right place at the right time?
