Why doesn’t Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (”MLSE”) buy and operate an NHL team in Hamilton?
It occurs to me. With the market being under served and with the Canadian dollar worth more than our American counterparts ($1 CDN = $1.02 USD as of this post), MLSE should be able to increase their profits if they operated a second NHL team in Hamilton.
If you put the team in the Western Conference which can easily be done (Central Division), then Hamilton will rarely have to compete on ice with the Leafs. The Sabres franchise will probably object and most likely need to be paid off, but I think the Sabres have a strong enough fan-base to survive a team in Hamilton.
So my question is why doesn’t MLSE do this? Is there something that keeps a company or individual from owning two NHL teams? or is it just Bettman who hates the idea of expansion in Canada?
